We are pleased to announce Umoja’s 2nd Annual Student Leadership Summit. We are inviting each Umoja Program to send five student leaders and one advisor who commits to working with these students next academic year to our summit. This is a free event.

We are excited to convene, train, and organize our student leaders to go forward to make great contributions to their local programs and the broader campus environment for African American students this coming academic year. The summit will  provide historically and culturally grounded leadership training. Umoja student leaders will also be featured prominently in next years' Umoja events and receive ongoing training provided by Umoja throughout the year.

Join us as we organize 300 empowered African American student leaders to make a significant impact on Black achievement in our system. Once we take this step together, there is no stopping us, so please mobilize your team to attend this first annual summit.

Schools can send up to five students and one faculty advisor to the Student Leadership Institute. Please register each student and include their names and email addresses as well as any dietary or ADA accommodations that are needed.  These students will then be included in the confirmation email.

Cost: Registration is free and includes lodging and meals, and some funds for travel.

Email general questions to info@umojacommunity.org.

Travel and Lodging

Travel:

Coordinators are responsible for making travel arrangements for themselves and their students and will be reimbursed for the most reasonable method of travel. Please make travel arrangements well in advance as reimbursements will only apply to arrangements made three weeks in advance.

Southwest Airlines Group Travel: For schools traveling from farther, coordinators may consider using the Southwest Group travel option. This allows for groups to book travel in advance and make name/traveler information changes up to 72 hours prior to travel date. Groups can also pay a deposit upon booking and the remaining balance at a later time. As this is only available for groups with a minimum of ten travelers, schools are encouraged to partner with other coordinators traveling from the same airport. More information can be found here. Please see the UC Merced website for additional information for arriving by air.

Bus: If you plan to arrive by bus, accomodations can be made with prior coordination. Please contact the Umoja office for more information.

Van/Car: There will be reserved parking spaces for this event. Please contact the Umoja office with details (number of cars, etc) if you plan to arrive by van or car.

Amtrak: As the closest airports would still require additional travel time to the university, we reccomend that colleges consider taking the train. The Merced Amtrak station is located at 324 W. 24 St., and Route UC stops at that location Monday through Friday.

Lodging:

Students will reside in Mariposa and Tuolumne Hall dorm rooms. Students will room with up to three students (of same gender) per room. Staff will have single room. These dorms are "suite" style so two rooms share a bathroom in the middle.
